HARLOO PRIVATE RESERVE, has belonged to the Rouillard family since 1959, and used to be part of the Pongola Game Reserve, proclaimed by President Paul Kruger in 1894, making it the first Wildlife Sanctuary in Africa, only second oldest in the world after Yellowstone (USA). This privately owned reserve is the hub of the operation.
Characteristic to the beautiful Zululand bushveld, the Reserve has wide valleys, flat land and occasional ridges providing spectacular panoramic views, covering approximately 9 x 3 miles.
HARLOO is a true African wilderness with an immense diversity of game, birds and trees. Experience the sight of the elusive and beautiful Nyala bull just before dusk, a graceful Kudu crossing the road, the elegant giraffe peeping at you through the thorn trees and the thrill of spotting herds of robust black Cape Buffalo. Over 20 hunt able species call Harloo Reserve home, from the petite little Red Duiker to the huge but nimble 7000 pound White Rhino.
The Pongola Game Reserve borders to the east and comprises of Jozini Lake - third biggest lake in South Africa with the beautiful blue Lebombo Mountain range forming the backdrop. A gentle boat cruise usually rewards you with a spectacular African sunset over the water. Hippo, Fish Eagle and croc sightings are common. Tiger fishing, Game- and bird viewing from the boat is a fantastic experience and a must!
HARLOO is situated approximately 280 miles Southeast of Johannesburg, south of a little independent country called Swaziland and 220 miles north of Durban. If you look at the Google map below, Harloo lies north of the N2 highway, south of the Swaziland border and all along the eastern side of the Pongola Nature Reserve. The closest airports are Richards Bay 2 hours away or Johannesburg 4 hours away.
The closest town is Pongola (20 mins) and Golela. It has sophisticated medical facilities in the unlikely event of an emergency. It is close to the tropical east coast and only 600 ft above sea level. May to September is generally crisp and sunny (85F) during the day and cool (45F) at night. From October it becomes warmer. Best time is April to October, but we hunt through the year.
